Michael Shawn Smith

Michael Shawn Smith, of Menard, Texas, passed into the kingdom of heaven on December 7, 2023, at the age of 40 years old. Michael was born August 24, 1983, in San Angelo, Texas to Michael (Bubba) and Jowanna (DeDe) Smith. He spent much of his childhood in Menard, surrounded by his extended family. Fishing in the park, camping trips and sleepovers with cousins were all a part of daily life. In his teen years, his family moved to Hunt, Texas. It was here that his passion for horses and the outdoors was cemented for a lifetime. In his adult years Michael went on to become an integral part of the Menard community. He was someone that could be called upon at any time to fix a vehicle, help a friend, or just be a listening ear. One of Michael's most proud moments was becoming a Menard County Sheriff's Deputy in 2017. He enjoyed protecting the community that was so integral to his raising. Of all his accomplishments in life, Michael was most proud of his children. In all he did, he kept them at the forefront of his life. A conversation with Michael was almost certain to include him bragging on his kids. Those left to cherish Michael's memory include his parents, Bubba and DeDe Smith, his brother, E.J. Smith, grandmother, Polly Reeves, partner, Amanda Angell and his children Houston, Kaitlynn, Kylie, Jackson and Amelia Smith and Kasey and Autumn Angell. He is also survived by many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends who loved him deeply. Michael was proceeded in death by grandparents J.D. and Dorothy Smith and Charlie and Sally Pfingsten. A visitation will be held Sunday, December 17, at 1:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Home in Menard, Texas. A service celebrating Michael's life will follow at 2:30 PM at Rest Haven Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Judy Swarts. Pallbearers include Houston Smith, Chris Pfingsten, Shane Sevier, Dillon Guerrero, Jennifer Towbridge, Jason Smith, Flynt Hisey and Carl Hisey. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Menard County Sheriff's Office Michael Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund at Menard Bank.
